Plant description

Arnica montana, sometimes mistakenly referred to as wolf's bane, has also been called leopard's bane, mountain tabacco and mountain arnica, is a European flowering plant in the sunflower family. It is noted for its large yellow flower head.

Arnica Montana is a flowering plant about 18–60 cm tall, aromatic fragrant, perennial herb. The flowering season is between May and August (Central Europe).

Arnica montana is widespread across most of Europe. It mostly grows on alpine meadows and up to nearly 3,000 m (9,800 ft). In more upland regions, it may also be found on nutrient-poor moors and heaths.

This plant is rare. It is protected in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and in some regions of Switzerland.

Properties

It has been used in herbal medicine for centuries. Helenalin is a sesquiterpene lactone found in Arnica montana. Helenalin has a variety of observed effects in vitro including anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities.

Helenalin has been shown to selectively inhibit the transcription factor NF-κB, which plays a key role in regulating immune response, through a unique mechanism. In vitro, it is also a potent, selective inhibitor of human telomerase—which may partially account for its antitumor effects—has anti-trypanosomal activity,
