Plant description

Evergreen shrub reaching usually up to 0.5-0.6 m in height - the only species of perennial heath type belonging to the heather family. Occurs in almost all of Europe and adjacent areas of Asia and Africa and as dragged on other continents. It grows in various plant communities and in various humidity conditions, however, always on acidic and poor soils. It is used in the wild state as a melliferous plant, obtained from nature as a medicinal plant and cultivated as an ornamental plant.

Heather is one of the most-valued melliferous plants - it is recognized as a healthy and valued heather honey.

     
 

Properties

- contains arbutins, tannins, erikolin, alkaloids, flavonoids, procyanidins, small amounts of essential oil, citric, tannic and silicic acid, minerals, among others with silicon and potassium

- in folk medicine, it is used as an anti-inflammatory (especially for the urethra), diuretic, antirheumatic, sedative and diaphoretic agent

- bitter compounds increase the secretion of gastric juice and have a weak diastolic effect

- polyphenolic compounds have antibacterial properties

- the tannin content inhibits the development of bacterial flora in the digestive tract

- the herb has been used in diseases of the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract, prostate enlargement, circulatory and menstrual disorders during menopause

- in folk medicine, the herb has been used in diseases of the respiratory tract

- heather herb has an astringent and disinfecting effect on the skin and is used in this area in cosmetics

- regionally, in folk medicine, infusion of heather herb was given to cows suffering from foot-and-mouth disease
