GUARANA 

 

Plant description

Paulinia guarana is a climbing plant in the maple family. native to the Amazon basin and especially common in Brazil. Guarana features large leaves and clusters of flowers, and is best known for the seeds from its fruit, which are about the size of a coffee seed ("bean"). The word guarana comes from the Guaraní word guara-ná, which has its origins in the Sateré-Maué word for the plant, warana, that in Tupi-Guarani means "fruit like the eyes of the people". 

     
 

Effect

The most important component, by which guarana has gained immense popularity is guaranine. It acts on the body the same as caffeine but differs from its chemical structure. Guarana contains 3 times more guaranine than coffee contains caffeine and is at the same time less harmful to health.

The following are attributed to guarana:

- has the effect of energizing and is released slowly from the body (other than caffeine in coffee), whereby its activity is increased by up to 6 hours

- stimulates the central nervous system, stimulating the release of dopamine and adrenaline, causing increased mental and physical activity while at the same time ensures good mood and well-being

- stimulates the brain, improves reflexes and has a positive effect on our memory

- improves concentration and general well-being

- helpful in combating depressive states (especially in cases of nervous exhaustion or premenstrual states)

- eliminates physical and mental fatigue

- increases the strength of the whole body - works well for people doing more exercise, recommended for athletes

- active substances in guarana accelerate metabolism and help burn fat

- has an antioxidant effect

- stops diarrhea

- reduces gas accumulated in the intestines and by that detoxicates

- is a diuretic and has a purifying effect

Adverse effects resulting from excessive intake of guarana:

insomnia, loss of appetite, anxiety, nausea, rapid heartbeat and even vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain - in such cases consult your doctor immediately

Contraindications to the use of guarana:

- high blood pressure, heart disease, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism
