Plant description

A species of plant from the brassica family. The Latin name is derived from Celtic - a plant growing near the sea. It occurs in Europe, a moderate part of Asia, New Zealand and North America. A crop and often wild. In Europe, it was cultivated already in the 11th century, for example, mentioned in her work by Hildegard of Bingen.

 

     
 

Properties

- herbal raw material: the root contains glycoside sinigrin, provitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, mineral salts (calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, iron), essential oil, sugars, enzymes

- horseradish has fungicidal, bactericidal, expectorant, and low diuretic and anti-rheumatic effects, stimulates the secretion of digestive juices and has antiviral activity

- used internally for bothersome cough and bronchitis, anemia, digestive disorders, chronic catarrh, rheumatic diseases, and liver and biliary tract diseases (except cirrhosis)

- externally compresses from freshly grated root are used for rheumatic diseases and neuralgia (they irritate the skin)

- finely grated horseradish is used to wash the face in the morning and evening. It removes discoloration and freckles from the skin, whitens the skin and makes it softer

 - grown as a spice

- in the kitchen, horseradish roots are used to season meat, fish, beetroot, pickled cucumbers, white cheese and is used to make some types of mustard, creams and mayonnaise
