Plant description A species of evergreen trees from the Lauraceae family - growing up to 24 m in height. Excavations show that avocados were used as early as 7,000 BC. It originally comes from southern Mexico, but has spread relatively quickly from North America - through Central - to South America. Avocados probably started their "life" in Peru, where it is believed to have been originally cultivated some 8,000 - 9,000 years ago. In Guatemala, the fruit, dried leaves, fresh leaves, skin, bark, and avocado seeds are used medicinally by the natives. |
