Plant description An evergreen shrub from the cypress family. It occurs in the northern hemisphere from the circumpolar region to the mountains of southern Europe, Asia and North America. It grows in very different habitats - from swamps, through forests, to grasslands, fallow land and rocky areas. It is also a very variable species - the Eurasian typical variety reaches up to a dozen or so meters in height, while the remaining varieties are climbing or picking up, reaching a small height. Juniper heath has a versatile utility meaning and played an important role in human culture, also as a magical plant. The name "juniper" comes from the barren, sandy areas on which this plant is successfully coping. It is used, among others as a medicinal plant, edible (fruits - cones are used as a spice), oily, barley. It is often grown as a decorative shrub. In the natural environment, it plays an important biocenotic role. |
