Plant description

Common sea buckthorn, common sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) – Common and folk names: bodzieniec, rosemary”, rosemary tree, sea thorn, forest olive, buckthorn, bodlak.

A species of plant from the family Olivaceae. It occurs in Europe and Asia. It is a light-loving pioneer species growing on mountain slopes, in river valleys and along sea coasts. In Poland, its natural sites are only on the Baltic coast. The species is often cultivated as an ornamental plant, and its popularity as an orchard plant is also growing.

Fruits and their products, due to the significant share of biologically active substances, are considered functional food. The skin of the fruit and the bark contain serotonin, which is rarely found in plants.

There is no ascorbinase in the fruit, which is why vitamin C is well preserved in them after harvesting, drying and processing. The fruit contains little sugar (more in cultivated varieties), and in addition: vitamin A (of the carotenoids, mainly β-carotene

Sea buckthorn leaves are characterized by a significant protein content, as well as a large share of bioactive components. They contain β-carotene, vitamin E, flavonoids, triterpenes, catechins, ellagic and folic acid, and numerous mineral compounds.

Properties

- rich in many microelements, they are a good source of protein with high nutritional value and bioactive substances, mainly antioxidant compounds

- sea buckthorn leaves and shoots were used in ancient times as food for animals, especially for horses, to obtain shiny fur and gain body weight

- as an infusion used for gastric problems, supporting liver regeneration, food poisoning and ulcers, as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, astringent, antibacterial, antiviral agent, supporting the cardiovascular system

- externally, an infusion used to improve the condition of the skin and hair, anti-acne
