Plant description

Evergreen shrub reaching usually up to 0.5-0.6 m in height - the only species of perennial heath type belonging to the heather family. Occurs in almost all of Europe and adjacent areas of Asia and Africa and as dragged on other continents. It grows in various plant communities and in various humidity conditions, however, always on acidic and poor soils. It is used in the wild state as a melliferous plant, obtained from nature as a medicinal plant and cultivated as an ornamental plant.

Heather is one of the most-valued melliferous plants - it is recognized as a healthy and valued heather honey.

- contains arbutins, tannins, erikoline, alkaloids, flavonoids, procyanidins, small amounts of essential oil, citric acid, tannic acid and silicic acid, mineral compounds, among others with silicon and potassium

- is an additive to herbal preparations used for eye diseases

- infusions and decoctions have found an external application in inflammation, eczema and hard to heal wounds

- used after a meal, has a diuretic and anti-inflammatory effect on the urinary tract, and before a meal for problems with the digestive system

- in folk healing, heather baths were also used for rickets

- thanks to the content of hydroquinone, stimulates the secretion of digestive juices, acts as a diastolic and diuretic

- inhibits the growth of bacteria in the digestive tract
