A species of perennial belonging to the family Rosaceae. It is a Eurosyberian species, occurs in Asia from Siberia through Mongolia to China and in northern and central Europe. It grows on the banks of waters, on wet meadows, in luminous riverside bushes, over ditches.
- contains essential oils, flavonoids, tannins, organic acids, mineral salts and phenolic glycosides
- in folk medicine, it was used to combat parasites of the gastrointestinal tract, as anti-haemorrhagic and antidiarrheal herb
- it is attributed to antipyretic properties (due to the content of salicin), diaphoretic, diuretic and anti-rheumatic
- used for the treatment of colds, diseases of the upper respiratory tract, auxiliary to influenza and rheumatic diseases, usually mixed with other herbs; black lilac, willow bark, birch leaves
