Plant description

A species of plant from the Lamiaceae family. It comes from the Mediterranean region (Albania, Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy), but it has also spread outside this area here and there. It is grown in many countries around the world. Reaches a height of 50-70 cm. It has a tendency to lie down. Known in ancient times as a medicinal plant, as well as magical. Greeks and Romans used it as a cure for snake bites, vision problems, and memory loss. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a medicine for colds, fevers, epilepsy, liver disease and constipation. It was also considered an aphrodisiac. Arab scholars have claimed that sage consumption prolongs life. In ancient Rome, the collection of sage as a magic plant was accompanied by specific customs.

- contains volatile oils (thujone, cineole, camphor and pinene), tannins, flavonoids, organic acids, bitterness, large amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin PP and carotenes, large amounts of vitamin C

- sage infusions are a known means of soothing inflammation of the throat and skin

- considered as a soothing remedy for depression, fatigue, exhaustion

- used for excessive night sweating

- popularly used externally to rinse the mouth, throat, purulent gingivitis, thrush and for angina

- used for compresses for difficult to heal wounds, leg ulcers, baths in rheumatic diseases, rashes and other cutaneous diseases

- tea made from sage leaves is used to counteract diarrhea, for irrigating the vagina with vaginal discharge

- considered a mild antifungal agent, and antitussive, relieving symptoms occurring during menopause

- used to reduce lactation, eg during breast inflammation - can lead to complete loss of food
