The caigua (pronounced kai-wa) is a herbaceous vine grown for its edible fruit, which is predominantly used as a vegetable. It is the fruit of this South American vine that has medicinal properties. In South America they are eaten raw or cooked. The leaves and seeds also have healing properties.
Caigua is used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Bioactive substances found in the plant have a beneficial effect on lipid metabolism thus lowering total cholesterol. Therefore it reduces blood pressure, but also aligns the level of sugar in the blood and cleanses the arteries from cholesterol deposits. Caigua is therefore used in the case of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke.
It is also used in the treatment of diabetes caused by improper diet.
Caigua has anti-inflammatory properties and is used in the treatment of tonsillitis, infections of the ear and anginas. It is used externally (chopped fruits or leaves) in cases of skin inflammations.
