Plant description

A species of plant from the Urticaceae family. Occurs in the wild state in Europe, Asia, North Africa, North America, and has been dragged into other areas and continents. It grows in damp forests and bushes, and very often, as a synanthropic species, on fertile ruderal habitats. Due to the presence of prickly-burning hairs, it causes painful irritation of the skin of humans and animals.

- contains chlorophylls, β-carotene, xanthophylls, protoporphyrins, vitamin C, tannins, glycokinins, mineral salts - especially a lot of potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, some rare elements, e.g. titanium, vitamine K, silicic acid and pantothenic oil, traces of oil ethereal, there is a compound in resinous hairs close to resin acids, acetylcholine, histamine, serotonin and traces of formic acid

- sitosterols contained in the root are used in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy in the early stage of the disease - they do not eliminate the disease, but slow it down and it is the most common curative application of nettle root in modern medicine

- root - stronger than leaves - works weakly diuretic, but inhibits resorption, accelerating the elimination of chlorides, urea and harmful metabolic products from the bloodstream

- used in folk medicine in skin diseases, hair care and dandruff, asthma and cough, less often in female diseases, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and blood and colds

- in Africa, the nettle was also used for edema, diarrhea and helminthia

- used as an alternative in the treatment of type 2 diabetes in order to slightly lower the blood sugar level

- used in inflammation of the urinary tract and skin

- supportive in metabolic processes and to stimulate the activity of endocrine glands

- flavonoids, tannins and vitamin K have anti-hemorrhagic effects, increase hemoglobin level and the number of erythrocytes, improve intestinal peristalsis

- used especially for spring weakness to stimulate the production of interferon and viral antigens

- used for anemia

- externally when healing wounds, boils and ulcers
