Plant description Japanese pagoda tree, Chinese scholar tree, pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum (L.) Schott) – a species of tree from the legume family. Brought to Europe in 1750 from Japan. Contrary to some names, it does not come from Japan, but from China and Korea. Widely cultivated in parks and gardens in France and southern England. In Central Europe, mainly on the southern side of the Carpathians.

Properties Used in traditional Chinese folk medicine, it is one of the 50 basic herbs. Due to its content of vitamins C and P, it is a valuable element in the prevention of scurvy; regular intake of pagoda tree preparations gently lowers blood pressure and lowers cholesterol; accelerates wound healing; has a mild antispasmodic effect on the digestive system.
