Plant description A species of plant from the cabbage family. It grows wild in North Africa, much of Asia (Western Asia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, China) and almost all of Europe. |

Properties It is primarily the main ingredient of mustard. The seeds are used to season marinades, cold meats, herbal butters, mayonnaise, and salads. They are also great for pickled cucumbers and other vegetables with vinegar. In Indian cuisine, ground mustard is added to chutneys and other sauces. Usually, the seeds are roasted in hot oil to give them a pungent aroma. In folk medicine, it is used as a medicinal plant - seeds are used in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, as a so-called mucus drug, i.e. coating, anti-inflammatory, laxative. Externally used for tonsillitis and pharyngitis (for rinsing). The volatile oil of this plant is a basic pharmacological raw material, used, inter alia, for the preparation of patches soothing rheumatic pains and colds. !!! ATTENTION !!! Black mustard seeds, consumed in higher doses, can damage the kidneys and urinary tract, causing hematuria and proteinuria, and in women, severe uterine congestion, and in the case of pregnancy, even miscarriage, and finally central nervous system paralysis. |
