Plant description

A species of perennial plant belonging to the family of oysteraceae. It blooms from May to June. Occurs in Europe, except for the southern extremities, in Central Asia, Siberia, Asia Minor. Trailed to North America. A honey plant.

     
 

Properties

Herbal raw material is a root.

- comfrey in its composition has lithospermic acid - derivative of chicory acid and related to rosemary acid with antigonadotropic and protective properties on liver parenchyma (hepatoprotective) and may be used in excessive production of gonadotropin hormones from the pituitary gland

- the inulin contained in the root belongs to the prebiotic fructans

- allantoin stimulates tissue regeneration, especially epithelial and anti-inflammatory - contains ukopolysaccharides, pirocatechol tannins, carotene, as well as phenolic glycosides, beta-sitosterol, silicic acid, steroid saponins and triterpenoids

- comfrey mucus consist of d-glucuronic acid, mannose, xylose, arabinose and rhamnose

- the root contains a lot of calcium, iron, phosphorus, manganese, cobalt, vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and P

- in folk medicine, the comfrey root was primarily used in the treatment of catarrh of the respiratory system, difficult to heal wounds, in the treatment of open fractures and damage to soft tissue, edema fractures

- in the past, the root was boiled for several minutes and the decoction was administered as a diaphoretic agent, covering the mucous membranes, coating the gastrointestinal tract, soothing irritation of the stomach and intestines, with inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract

- as a mucous and coating agent used in the treatment of diarrhea and as a means to accelerate the healing of stomach ulcers

- used to relieve painful cramps of the large intestine

- recognized as an effective remedy for the treatment of irritable bowel

- externally, comfrey has been used in the form of decoction and decoction packs in the treatment of pimples and inflammation of the skin, in the treatment of eye fatigue, eye shadows, under-eye bags, dry eye syndrome, conjunctivitis and corneal inflammation.

- washing the skin with decal is supposed to cure dry skin and soothe rosacea,

- comfrey decoction is used to treat atopic dermatitis

!!! NOTE: Some sources indicate that due to the content of hepatotoxic pyrolysidine alkaloids, comfrey is not used internally due to the possibility of lethal poisoning. Other sources, on the other hand, state that the content of harmful alkaloids is trace.
