Plant description Genus of plants belonging to the family Ranunculaceae. It includes 15 species[4]. In Western Europe, from the British Isles to Spain, there are two species. Many hellebore species, hybrids between them and cultivated varieties are grown as ornamental plants, attractive due to their very early flowering, often still in winter.

Properties Many species have long been used in herbal medicine and homeopathy. The plants contain active substances – steroid saponins (e.g. helleborine) and bufadienolides (e.g. helebrin). Although diluted preparations of these plants are sometimes used in homeopathy, they are not used in modern medicine. In Poland (formerly in the Bieszczady Mountains) and Slovakia, purple hellebore was used in folk medicine for heart ailments. Caucasian hellebore (sold under the Russian name "moroznik") is used as a drug that cleanses the body and helps with weight loss. Due to its strong toxic properties, the use of hellebore or its preparations is only allowed under the supervision of a doctor. |
