Plant description Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) - a species of tree from the nutmeg family, evergreen tree, growing up to 10 meters. It comes from the Banda Islands - parts of the Moluccas known as the Spice Islands, which are part of the Malay Archipelago. It has fruits - single-seeded capsules, fleshy, spherical or slightly shaped. The bags are bursting with two flaps. They contain a brown seed with a grooved surface and a marbled white-gray 'nucleus' surrounded by a lacy parchment with a purple-red color, known as the nutmeg spice. Flos Macidis - macis, nutmeg aril - is obtained from the aril surrounding the nutmeg seed. similar in taste, although more subtle, and therefore more often used to flavor salty dishes. Nutmeg oil is a substitute for nutmeg oil. |
